Healthy horses and successful breeding

Whether illness in individual animals or across stock, speedy and reliable testing secures success.

breeding and reproductive disorders

Bacteriological testing of cervix swabs can deliver important information regarding the animal's health in the course of routine testing or in cases of disorder indication. In cases of abortions or puerperal problems, reliable testing can ensure successful therapy.

Determination of bacteria and resistance testing with the microdilution process can help when treating acute and sub-clinical infections.

Testing for mastitis in mares is comparable with that of cattle. Take a look at the page on cattle for more details.

Stallion swab samples can also be tested in the course of andrological diagnosis.

bacteriological testing of swab samples:

  • haemolysing streptococcus

  • haemolysing staphylococcus

  • E. coli

  • Klebsiella

  • Pseudomonas aeruginosa

  • Taylorella equigenitalis (CEM)

CEM testing is required for exporting to Canada and the USA. Samples cooled in Amies transport medium with charcoal can be sent within 48 hours.

molecular-biological testing (PCR) of organ and abort material

  • equine arteritis virus (EAV) also from semen

  • equine herpesvirus (EHV-1,2 and 4)

  • chlamydia

  • leptospires (pathogen species)

respiratory disorders

bacteriological testing of swabs or washings from nasal cavities for:

  • haemolysing Streptococcus

  • Streptococcus equi (pathogen for Strangles)

  • Streptococcus equi zooepidemicus (common in foals and young animals)

  • haemolysing Staphylococcus

  • other pathogens (e.g. Pasteurella, Rhodococcus, Bordetella and Klebsiella)

diarrhoea pathogens

parasitological testing with sedimentation/flotation method for determination of parasite eggs:

gastrointestinal strongyles

  • pinworms (Strongyloides stercoralis) (especially in foals)

  • tape worms (especially in young animals)

  • liver fluke

bacteriological testing of excrement and swabs for:

  • E. coli

  • Salmonella (typification)

skin and wound infections

bacteriological testing of skin and wound swabs for:

  • haemolysing Staphylococcus

  • haemolysing Streptococcus

  • other pathogens (e.g. Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Dermatophilus congolensis)

mycological testing of hair and skin samples for:

  • Dermatomycoses (Trichophyton, Microsporum and Candida)

parasitological testing of hair and skin scrapings for:

  • ectoparasites (e.g. mange mites and biting lice)
